But once you begin spending 30+ minutes every turn playing "Clean up the Rebels", it will get old. They aren't hard to kill, nor are they anything more than a nuisance. and by midgame, even a trade empire can't afford to bribe them all and attack one/two other civilizations at the same time. You can leave 'em alone if you want, but that hurts your economy quite a bit. It doesn't help that they slowly get stronger, eventually to the extent that it takes a medium sized force to guarantee minimal losses. but once you own 2/3rds of Europe, and 5-6 groups of these guys pop up every other turn even if EVERY SINGLE CITY has 100+ satisfaction with you. "I can just send one or two cavalry units out and crush them" you say. but those are usually the "12000 gold for 3 peasant armies and me seems like a good price, eh?" types of situations. Sometimes you get a semi-useless general out of the bribery, too. There's only two ways to deal with them: Kill them or pay sometimes ridiculous amounts of cash to make them vanish. They are these insignificant grey-banner people who randomly pop up to do nothing other than sit in one place, turning the land "black" and causing you economy damage. You've probably already seen a few groups of them by now.

I restarted after a days worth of play to make 4 diplomats and send them on a world tour for trade rights when the game began /gave a little more priority to public sanitation, but other that there's not a super steep learning curve. It's rather fun when you start out and take over a few territories/waste a little time. I'm not a huge RTS fan, either, but I did enjoy Rome for a little while.
